5Rhythms®

Gabrielle Roth's 5 Rhythms® is a dance practice, a dynamic moving meditation, where we explore how our body wants to move, how our emotions move through our body, how our stories show up in our dance, so that as we dance, we explore how, and who, we truly are.

Each of the Rhythms - Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, Stillness - has a different kind of energy, and gives us the chance to experience, practise and play with different aspects of being human:

  • in Flowing, our movements are rounded, circling, continuous, focusing on our feet and our connection with the earth

  • in Staccato, our movements are defined and angular, with shapes and edges, as we find the beat in our hips, the passion in our hearts and clarity to express ourselves in the world

  • in Chaos, we shake up, shake out, let go, giving permission to our whole body to move, to tremble, to experience change

  • and from the crucible of Chaos comes Lyrical, the freedom to move as only we can, to find the creative spirit that is our own unique dance

  • in Stillness are the movements that come when there is nothing left but awareness of this moment, this breath, this heart, beating to the same pulse in every living being.

In a 5 Rhythms® class or workshop, we almost always dance through the "Wave" - each Rhythm in turn - although there may also be teaching focused on a particular Rhythm or on specific aspects of the practice.  There are no steps or sequences of movements to copy or learn.  Sometimes you might "try on" someone else's movements, including the teacher's, but this is only as a chance to try out and explore something different.  The practice is in finding your own Flow, your own Staccato, your own Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness, your own dance. And that dance will change, and deepen, the more you practise the Rhythms.
